Solon football: Comets up to speed and coming of age — 2025 camp tour

SOLON, Ohio — A year ago, Solon adjusted to the Suburban League after nearly a decade in the Greater Cleveland Conference.

Now, the Comets have another challenge: moving back up to Division I.

It comes just as a young team is growing up. Solon, with a big junior class, has playmakers throughout its lineup. Some are college prospects. A new quarterback will be under center, but four starters are back on the offensive line. The defense has seven returning starters, which could make the Comets one of Northeast Ohio’s breakout teams.

“When you’re playing on Friday, the game is sped up,” coach Brian Wisniewski said Wednesday after practice. “When you’re thinking about that, it’s hard to play to your potential. I think that’s been the thing for some of these guys early on is just getting that pace.”

Junior linebacker Brock Stone felt that a year ago, one of many sophomores on the field for that first season in the Suburban League.

“I think the tempo changed really quick,” Stone said. “The first few weeks, it showed. We lost in the fourth quarter late. I think the tempo does change and experience does help with our team.”

Two of Solon’s top prospects include Brady Bush (64 tackles, five tackles for loss) at tight end and defensive end, and electric cornerback Khyier Robinson. With several offers from Mid-American Conference programs, Robinson expects to play a bigger role on offense at receiver. Bush holds an offer from Kent State.

They lost quarterback Jack Sanders earlier this year as a transfer to St. Edward, but junior Brody Cowan has stepped in his place. The new quarterback will have a slew of weapons. They include A.J. Jefferson (419 yards, five TDs) and an addition in Bryer Pickana, who rushed for 1,500 yards last year at Ravenna Southeast. Bush is one of Northeast Ohio’s top tight ends, while senior Cooper Walker (344 yards, one TD, 20 receptions) returns on both sides of the ball with Robinson. Stone, meanwhile, led the Comets in tackles (73, plus three interceptions) last year while adjusting to the speed of varsity.
