Nat. Guard in Memphis, CLE: Darcy cartoon

CLEVELAND, Ohio — On the heals of Commander-in-Chief Donald Trump’s talk of next deploying the National Guard to Memphis, Tennessee, his former White House Aid, U.S. Rep. Max Miller, who’s running for reelection, has called for the National Guard to also be deployed to Cleveland.

Rep. Miller who grew up on the east side of Cleveland, has been representing Cleveland’s West/South side suburbs. He made his deployment declaration in a Washington Times opinion page essay.

“My constituents in the suburbs are afraid to go into the city. The Cleveland I grew up in is now unrecognizable . Families no longer feel safe walking down the street, and small businesses are being boarded up. Last year, an officer was killed in the line of duty by someone with a criminal history. Just this month, five people were shot after the Browns game in the Flats.”

Governor DeWine’s office noted Ohio is a ‘Home Rule’ state, meaning it’s up to the Mayor of the city to request the National Guard.

The only Guards Mayor Bibb wants to see deployed are the Cleveland Guardians to the playoffs as division winners or a wildcard berth.
