MEDINA, Ohio – Staff and volunteers at the Medina County Dog Shelter will soon spend a weekend in training for a nationally acclaimed program that works to make life better for the lives of shelter dogs.
Dogs Playing for Life focuses on canine well-being from the day the dog arrives at the shelter until the day they find their forever home.
“We had put together a dog shelter advisory committee and one of the volunteers on the committee had mentioned this as a good training resource,” said Medina County Administrator Matthew Springer. “There is a benefit that has been experienced in other shelters, so we wanted to get our staff and volunteers involved.”
During a two-day seminar that will take place Oct. 18 and 19, shelter staff and volunteers will learn how to safely introduce dogs into playgroups, tips for managing different play styles and personalities, warning signs to prevent problem interactions and how playgroups can improve adoption outcomes.
“The concept is that when we get dogs exposed to social environments and get them more exercise, the better it is for them and helps them to better interact with humans and other dogs,” Springer said. “This is something we want to do multiple times a week.”
The dog shelter is seeking donations of supplies to make the program a success including standard 6-foot and 10-foot clip leashes – https://a.co/d/aV0Nvhi; flat collars – https://a.co/d/cgbEx4g; martingale collars – https://a.co/d/9di3Ogu; small spray bottles – https://a.co/d/aB5qVDv; and empty 16-ounce water bottles, 20-ounce Gatorade bottles or gallon milk jugs with lids. The shelter asks donors to use the recommended options to ensure the correct equipment is purchased.
Donors can either drop off donations at the shelter or have it shipped to the shelter which is located at 6334 Deerview Lane, Medina, OH 44256.
